1)  OCTOBER 5--MESQUITE POD MILLING in Cascabel, AZ

     Collect mesquite pods this summer and bring them to Cascabel for milling into nutritious and delicious      flour.  Free milling for non-commercial home use.  Mesquite pancake breakfast offered.

Time and place:  Cascabel @ Thomases' knoll. (See directions below.)

     Breakfast from 9:00-10:00 A.M.

     Milling:  10:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M.

Cost:  Donations gratefully accepted.

Note:  Ripe pods come off tree with little pulling.  Rinse, then dry in sun for about 3 days.  Store in dry              place until milling day.

2)  OCTOBER 19--SOLAR FOOD DRYING in Tucson, AZ

     Build and take home a simple, effective solar food dryer.  Learn the basic techniques of this method of food      preservation from two folks who have lived in the Sonoran Desert without refrigeration for 5 years.

Led by:  David Omick and Pearl Mast

Time and place:  10:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. at 2018 W. Los Reales, Tucson.  (See directions below.)

Cost:  $35.00

3)  OCTOBER 20--HOME CANNING in Tucson, AZ

     Learn this time-tested food preservation method from someone who grew up canning for a household of   12 people.  We'll practice pressure canning, water bath canning, and canning jams, with samples of each        to take home with you.

Led by:  Pearl Mast

Time and place:  10:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. at 2018 W. Los Reales, Tucson.  (See directions below.)

Cost:  $25.00

4)  NOVEMBER 9--GEOLOGY WALK III in Cascabel, AZ

           For our third Geology Walk we'll be exploring another part of Hot Springs Canyon, and going further back in geological time.  The walk will be about 4 miles long, and involves about 400 ft. of descending and      climbing.

Led by:  Mick Meader, staff member of the Department of Geosciences at U of A; and

          Bob Scarborough,  geological consultant for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

Time and place:  Cascabel.  Meet at 10:00 A.M. at Thomases' knoll (See directions below.) and we will provide         4WD transportation to the canyon rim on Gamez Rd.  The walk will last until about 4:30 P.M.

Suggested donation:  $8.00

5)  NOVEMBER 16--THOMAS BERRY DISCUSSION in Tucson

     Learn more about author Thomas Berry's insights and hopes for living in a mutually enhancing human/earth      relationship.

Led by:  Shirley Pevarnik, who has studied with Thomas Berry for the past 6 years.

Time and place:  9:00AM - 3:30 PM, at the home of Mary Lou Gonzalez-Leitner, 203 S. Bella Vista, Tucson

Suggested donation:  $20-30

DIRECTIONS:

TO THOMASES' KNOLL (CASCABEL):  Take I-10 Exit 306 just east of Benson and go north on Pomerene Road, which becomes Cascabel Rd., to mile marker 22 (pavement ends at Mile 12).  About 3/4 mile past mile marker 22, look for the green and white county address sign "5780".  Turn left down the lane beside the sign.  Go through a barbed-wire gate and take the first right where you'll see parking.

TO LOS REALES (TUCSON):  (for food preservation workshops only):  Go west on Valencia from I-19 Exit 95, and turn left on Indian Agency Road (across from KMart), which becomes Los Reales Road.  Address is 2018 W. Los Reales Road. 

To 203 S. BELLA VISTA (TUCSON):  (Near base of "A" Mountain.)  Heading west on Congress, turn left onto Cuesta (right before stop sign at Silver Bell), follow Cuesta around (turns into Sentinel Peak Rd.) past Clausen and over 2 speed bumps and turn right on Bella Vista.  4th house on right.
